A dispatch from the edge of knowing

Nobody Knows What’s Next. Please RSVP ASAP.

How we turned uncertainty into a recurring event. We may not know the answers, but we know important people who really don't know.

Thought hospitality

Last week, I sat across from a man whose biography required its own landing page.

I asked him what comes next.

“Could you pass the salt?”

That stayed with me.

I had arrived looking for an answer. He had arrived looking for salt. Somehow, we both left as thought leaders.

For 25 years, I’ve been bringing people together around questions that matter. Where are we going? Who needs to be in the room? Has anyone validated parking?

The questions change. The room remains.

At first, we thought the future was on the blockchain. Then we discovered that many of the people on the blockchain would also enjoy a drink.

This was an important insight.

We had been so focused on decentralization that we nearly overlooked the power of everyone coming to the same address.

Then AI arrived.

We didn’t predict it. But we had chairs. And sometimes being ready for the future means having enough chairs for whoever predicted it.

Today, we stand at the edge of something much larger: the ability to ask people what they think, collect their answers, and tell other people what they said.

For the first time.

Before now, humanity had only interviews, surveys, focus groups, researchers, facilitators, and several thousand years of conversation.

Those were activities.

This is infrastructure.

Here is how it works. Before dinner, people speak into a computer. The computer identifies themes. At dinner, we read those themes back to the people who supplied them.

They feel heard.

Which is understandable. They recognize the sentences.

But the real breakthrough happens next.

Someone says “trust.” Someone else says “community.” A third person says “What exactly are we deciding?”

We call that a hidden tension.

AI helps us surface it in a report we will discuss at the next dinner.

This is how understanding becomes alignment. Alignment becomes momentum. Momentum becomes a calendar invitation. And a calendar invitation, accepted by the right person, becomes a movement.

Notice the arrows. That’s how you know it’s a framework.

Of course, people ask about results.

What changed? Compared with what? How do you know the AI didn’t miss something?

These are excellent questions. We’ve added them to a Listening Sprint.

For too long, leaders have been trapped by the need to describe what their organizations actually do. We’re helping them move beyond that.

A meeting can become a salon. A salon can become a lab. A lab can become an operating system. And an operating system can still serve deviled eggs.

That’s the beauty of building in New Orleans.

Other cities are competing to develop better models. We’re asking a more human question: could the model come by around five?

We have rhythm. Ritual. Relationships. A room with unusual acoustics. These are advantages you cannot reproduce in Silicon Valley without booking a flight and locating the RSVP link.

I used to think the building was the point.

Then I thought permanently securing the building was the point.

Now I understand that permanence is a relationship you have with your mission, not necessarily with your landlord.

That is growth.

The same is true of knowing.

When someone asks an ordinary person where AI is going and they say they don’t know, the conversation ends.

When someone with a sufficiently long biography says it, the conversation becomes a keynote.

The words haven’t changed.

The seating chart has.

I briefly considered adding a quote from Walter Isaacson here. Then I realized that mentioning Walter Isaacson might be enough.

We are entering a new era.

An era in which we will measure progress through deeper connection, clearer alignment, and the number of people who tell us the room had great energy.

Some will ask whether that is enough.

We believe those people should come to dinner.

Bring your hardest question. Bring your biggest uncertainty. Bring someone who knows what they’re talking about. We’re nearly ready to announce the panel. Bring someone with a lot of money.

The future is already here.

The agenda will follow.

What’s next is Now.

More details coming soon-ish.

Found this useful? Neither did we. Forward it to your leadership team and invite them to dinner.

The conversation

No consensus yet.

Welcome to the movement.

You’re now thought-adjacent.

We’re not sure where it’s going. You’re already part of it.
